After reading the topics on this mesage board i thought it might be a good idea to change my hydrolic oil in my 790 john deere with 90 hours. I removed the screen and cleand out all metal shaveings. Now i can't get the area were the screen is to stop leaking. there was no gasket. should there be? It just slowly dripps and is driving me mad.

It has been a long time, but I believe there is a thin O'Ring. As I recall it jumped off when you removed the screen housing. I remember thinking this could not possibly seal and hunting around in the dirt to find it. ....

I'm feeling kinda stupid right now.
I seached to the bottom of my old oil and found a o-ring. I new there had to be something. Thank you so much for responding to my problem. Do you guys think it would be ok to salvage the new oil that i used. I am assuming that i have to drain all oil again before replacing the o-ring
....

You are correct on the draining the new oil. Walmart sells a funnel with a fine screen for about $5. It is slow going but should catch anything that may be in the oil large enough to cause a problem. If you drain your oil out into a ABSOLUTELY CLEAN catch pan and pour off all but the last quart or two; you should be able to get most of the oil back in and leave any dirt or droppings in the bit left behind, just top off with some new oil. Doing it this way you probably would not need the screen funnel but it is safer to use it. ....

Isn't that sort of ironic.
You miss an O-ring in cleaning the screen.
Now you have to carefully pour out the new oil into a funnel with a screen in it so that you don't get a bunch of junk in the oil that will just clog up the newly cleaned screen.
It's almost like a Government job I suppose.
Apparently I have too much time on my hands for getting philosophical too ...... Damn snow, not enough to blow or plow, just enough to make it more comfy in front of the fire.

Can't you get someone to hold a rag or something over the hole, while you put the o-ring back on over the screen.
Get someone with big fingers ;)
You'd lose a some but not much ....
